Trained as a physician at Geneva University, specialized in internal medicine, then, after a post-doctoral fellowship, became Associate Professor of medical informatics at Vanderbilt University before returning to Geneva to lead the Medical Informatics Division at Geneva University Hospitals. Author of more than 100 original scientific publications. Focuses on the development of innovative, knowledge-enabled information systems and computer-based tools for improving the quality, safety and efficiency of care processes, at the local level of the hospital, the regional level of a community healthcare informatics network, and at the global level with the Health-On-the-Net Foundation and with the development of a large telemedicine network in Africa. The RAFT, a network for distance education and telemedicine initiated in 2001, supports hundreds of care professionals in fifteen French-speaking African countries, through weekly distance continuing education sessions and remote consultations. It is based on a network of medical and technical coordinators active in each country, and partnerships including the Université Numérique Francophone Mondiale (UNFM) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
