Anthony Mironov (CEO) started Wingspan after experiencing the challenges at the intersection of how companies pay their extended workforce. Previous approaches to managing freelancers placed a wasteful administrative burden on contractors and companies alike — for managing episodic payments, accessing benefits, and wrangling 1099 tax issues — in a world that still seems to operate around a biweekly paycheck. By rationalizing the process through workflow automation, Wingspan is freeing up time and effort for the pursuit of real, creative enterprise. Anthony spent the majority of his career in payroll and benefits. When he became an independent consultant in 2017, it felt impossible: everything from getting access to benefits to getting paid services was difficult. He knew that the challenge was symmetrical for enterprises: Behind each independent contractor is an individual vendor, W9, 1099, e-signature, background check, and a reconciliation process — a situation that ultimately blocks companies from working with contractors more. Greg (CTO), too, had seen the pain points — his wife is a freelancer — and his experience in building large scale systems as the former Chief Architect at the Washington Post and previously working at Google Cloud drew him to the technical challenge. I worked closely with Clarion's operating partners to develop a secular investment thesis and long-term strategic vision for a national outsourced HR platform. We evaluated 30+ investment opportunities in the Professional Employer Organization space (small business payroll and healthcare), which ultimately culminated in a successful sale to a publicly traded competitor (Paychex). Clarion is a private equity firm which makes primarily control investments in a diversified portfolio of lower middle market companies.
