Antwerp Metropolitan Area
After running the experimental art space called Montevideo in the old harbour in Antwerp (1980-1984) with a renowned international program, (Mario Merz, Henk Visch, Niek Kemps, Luc Deleu, Jacques Vielle, Shirazeh Houshiary a.o. - catalogues), the Annie Gentils Gallery opened its doors in the centre of Antwerp in 1985. A continuous platform for contemporary art was created, presenting international artists including Michel Angelo Pistoletto ('87), Stephen Willats ('91), Paul-Armand Gette (91 - '10), Hubert Duprat ('00), Jacques Vieille ('86/'89/'91), Cécile Bart and Belgian artists Leo Copers, Guillaume Bijl, Bernd Lohaus, Luc Deleu , Filip Francis a.o. Today, the gallery presents contemporary multimedia and conceptual work, as well as painting and sculpture and continues to show the artists it has worked with in the early nineteen eighties (Luc Deleu, Stephen Willats, Paul-Armand Gette, Jacques Vieille), while we present and work with new talents - Wesley Meuris, Kris van Dessel, Els Vanden Meersch, Herman Van Ingelgem, Marie Cloquet, Marc Vanderleenen a.o. The gallery has two floors: This makes it possible to organize two concurrent exhibitions or to make an important solo exhibition or group exhibition. We organize 7 to 8 main exhibitions each year. The gallery is well known for his consistent line of quality and critical engagement. Publications and editions have supported the activities of the gallery from the early years until today. see also text Laura Hanssen in Witte Raaf http://www.anniegentilsgallery.com/about-annie-gentils-gallery Antony Hudek ( Objectif Antwerp) is currently working on the archive of Montevideo for the exhibition Montevideo 1980 - 1984 at Mhka Antwerp opening on June 15th 2016.
