Andy has over 30 years of experience in the field of Building and Construction, ranging from structural testing within the nuclear industry to fire testing. Having established the Dubai Cladding Technology Centre and Laboratory, and operated it for 10 years, he has particular knowledge of heavy structures testing and weathertightness testing of cladding, curtain walling and building envelope systems. He has carried out many consultancy projects as a third-party specialist in the field of building envelope technology. Over the most recent quarter of his career he has focussed on raising awareness about the dangers of combustible facades - a calling that has transitioned to expertise in how to fix the problems that most are now aware of. Regularly giving back to the industry, his current emphasis is on raising awareness of the criticality of planning for refurbishments in the Middle East in particular - citing the region's sustainability ambitions and commitments, an aging building stock and insufficient experience, preparation or resources as elements of a picture that needs attention to continue it's success. As a past chairman with long-standing association with the CIOB, Andy is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building, and a Fellow of the CIBSE Society of Facade Engineers. Specialties: FACADE TECHNOLOGY: mainly updates, testing and failure investigation. Laboratory development and management, and design consultancy. FIRE: testing business management, business development, marketing, government liaison, certification. PROJECT DELIVERY: strategic management and technical support. A particular focus is non-standard or problematic projects.
My focusses are raising internal and external awareness of the need to transition from all new construction to a growing refurbishment / reuse / repurposing market, and to guide that transition - all in the context of the global imperative to decarbonize and drive net-zero.
Leading and growing the Specialist Services group of disciplines for WSP in the Middle East. My purview is currently Facades, Fire and Life Safety, Acoustics and Security Risk Management but I have a firm intention to add, incubate, grow and develop additional technical disciplines.
