Started my career in the New South Wales Police Force on the 29th of October 1989 as a Student Police Officer at Goulburn. My career started with a bang, literally, as my first placement and first day on the job was at Hamilton Police Station on the 28th of December 1989. At 10.27am on Thursday, 28 December 1989, Newcastle was devastated by an ML 5.6 (Richter magnitude) earthquake. This was one of the most serious natural disasters in Australia's history. This certain set the tone for my career. I was attested as a Probationary Constable on the 29th of April 1990 and started working at Wyong Police Station in General Duties
In 1996 I completed the “Detectives Education Program” and the “National Advanced Criminal Investigation Program” receiving a designation as a Detective. In 2008 I successfully completed the New South Wales Police Force Senior Detectives Course in order to keep my skills current with procedure and legislative change. I have led a number of major and protracted investigations and I have been the Operation Commander on a number of Strike Forces during my career. These operations included joint investigations with internal and external Policing agencies. I have also been the Officer in Charge on both interstate and international investigations (Homicides). In 2012 I completed the New South Wales Police Force Homicide Course. I have led a number of homicide investigations and assisted others to ensure that they have been effectively investigated Since 2000 I have been a guest lecturer on the ‘Investigators Course’. I have provided lectures on the investigation into armed robbery, break and enter, controlled operations, electronic surveillance and drug related crimes. Since 2014 I have been the sole facilitator on this course developing skills of training junior police. I am a facilitator on Eaglei training and the new Search Warrant Risk Assessment training.
I supervise and direct criminal investigations, by all staff of the Newcastle City Police District. I lead and drive criminal investigations by the Detectives into crime and associated criminal activity within the District. I am a key advisor to the Crime Manager and District executive. I am responsible for the management, outcome and ethical conduct of criminal investigations to their finalisation. I provide direction and advice to all District staff in relation to criminal investigation. I oversee serious investigations in the role of the Senior Investigating officer when appropriate. I have daily management and responsibility for the Criminal Investigation Branch, Drug Investigation Unit, Child Protection Register Unit attached to the Newcastle City Police District.
