About

I am a Professor at Cardiff University working on the fundamental biology of human T-cell recognition, with the long-term aim of enabling better immunotherapies for cancer, infection, and immune-mediated disease. My work focuses on identifying T-cell ligands and understanding how they are recognised by their receptors, across both conventional and unconventional T-cell systems. Much of our recent research centres on developing and applying new experimental pipelines to discover previously unknown T-cell targets directly from clinical samples. I initially trained in Chemistry before completing a PhD in Genetics at the University of Liverpool. I then undertook postdoctoral training, and was promoted to the faculty, at the University of Utah, the spiritual home of the Human Genome Project and “the greatest snow on Earth”. In 1995, I returned to the UK to study how HIV evades the human immune system at the Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, where I became a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow. In 2006, I relocated to Cardiff University and later became a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator. I have been continuously funded by the Wellcome Trust for over 30 years. My research group studies antigen recognition by human T-cells, including both alpha beta and gamma delta systems, using discovery-driven approaches grounded in real patient biology. We supply well-characterised human T-cell clones covering a range of pathogen, autoimmune, and cancer specificities to industrial collaborators and clients. We also generate bespoke T-cell clones and T-cell receptors to order, including from clinical material. In short, T-cells R us, but with rigorous biology and full traceability. I have published over 200 scientific papers, cited more than 20,000 times in total. My work has featured on 28 journal covers, and my h-index is over 80.
