Structural Engineering summer placement with the Cardiff Buildings team, working on a variety of different schemes. Work ranged from RIBA stage 2 structural concept design for a large health and leisure development - including frame and slab optioneering, embodied carbon calculations, and dynamic analysis - to using 3D finite element modelling software to review structural capacity of existing retail building roof structures . The placement offered me valuable experience within a consultancy setting, working within a multidisciplinary team who place sustainability and the ethos of total architecture at the forefront of the design process.
Structural engineering summer placement. Projects worked on ranged from retaining walls, glass balconies, new build houses, to foundation design for large housing development sites - including tree root influence calculations and substructure design.
Set up a local plumbing and heating business. Undertaking all design, installation, maintenance and repair work. I built up client relationships, liaised with manufacturers, managed projects and sub-contractors, completed all quotes and project costings, and carried out technical installations. I undertook all commercial and financial work involved in running a business, whilst managing projects and work load to ensure targets were met and jobs completed on time and in budget. Commercial awareness is paramount to successfully run a small business – understanding what clients want, understanding the market and available products to properly advise on their designs and installations, which has awarded me a varied skill set.
