About

Data analytics may seem like an odd place for a 10 year fitness veteran. Throughout my journey of personal trainer to manager, an interest in statistics, numbers and data has always been in the background. Since connecting with my second passion, I have begun my Masters in Analytics at the University of Chicago. In addition to my course work, I have been fine-tuning my new skills with our data at Chicago Athletic Clubs. While I enjoy using statistical concepts and machine learning to uncover new understanding for the personal training department, the technical side of analytics is only half the battle. My ability to understand business challenges and communicate insights to leadership has become a vital skill. I understand I am still learning the data science world. I am coachable, dedicated, and excited to find new ways to develop my data skills. In addition to my graduate studies, my professional career and well rounded development has taught me the following about myself: I solve problems with technology. - I use data to uncover what is truly happening in a business. - I leverage my own Python and R scripts to improve efficiency. - I look for ways technology will improve the customer experience. I love being a part of a team, interacting with decision makers, and communicating insights. - I enjoy the team dynamic and sharing in our success together. - I am project oriented and excel in developing a process from start to finish. - I find effective way to communicate data to inspire and encourage coworkers. - I can easily swap between tech talk and exec talk. - I communicate the stories behind data for easy comprehension. I need to know why. - I am curious. - I love learning theory so I can better understand reality. - I dig deep when something does not make sense. I enjoy hearing new perspectives and meeting new people. Please reach out if you'd like to talk data, fitness, or anything related. Experience

  • Senior Data Scientist at Delta Dental of Missouri
    Jun 2024 - Present · 2 yrs 1 mo

  • Tokio Marine Highland (Chicago, Illinois, United States)
    • Principal Solutions Architect - Data Engineer
      Mar 2021 - Jun 2024 · 3 yrs 4 mos

      • Developed custom machine learning models, including a YOLOv5-based object detection model, to accurately predict a property's first-floor elevation. Integrated these models as a Flask API for consumption by the flood underwriting system, contributing to an estimated 20% reduction in modeled average aggregate losses. • Facilitated development of a REST API to efficiently pinpoint property-specific street view images from a vast collection of over 10,000 varying orientations stored in S3, provided by a third-party vendor. The API enhanced our computer vision-based first floor elevation model by supplementing it with complementary imagery. • Spearheaded the creation of a comprehensive, AWS-hosted postgreSQL database containing publicly accessible elevation certificates. Utilized Azure's Form Recognizer OCR services and implemented ETL Python pipelines on EC2, resulting in a robust dataset instrumental for flood catastrophe modeling. • Oversee a self-hosted Carto map visualization platform on AWS, collaborate with business stakeholders to create impactful maps. Implement and maintain ETL GIS pipelines using Geopandas, ECR and Lambda to automate the integration of shapefile data from third-party providers for real-time portfolio exposure management, flood underwriting, and hurricane event tracking. • Successfully retired an outdated MySQL database by transferring essential data to an AWS-hosted PostgreSQL database, and developed a Python script utilizing Selenium to automate the archiving of 185,000 web documents.

    • Data Analytics Intern
      Sep 2020 - Mar 2021 · 7 mos

My internship project was to solve a critical flood insurance problem: what is a properties distance to the nearest water body? To solve this problem I sourced GIS waterbody data for multiple states, set up a PostgreSQL database configured with PostGIS, and built a Python application using Flask to execute the required queries and calculations. The final product has been exposed as an API in our AWS production environment.
