Formerly I was a Professor of History and (award-winning) author of non-fiction books (JEWS AND THE AMERICAN SOUL; ADAPTING TO ABUNDANCE) and articles on history, culture, religion, politics, plus some comedic essays. I left a tenured position in academia in 2006 to take up a new career as a novelist but found myself instead drawn to playwriting. My plays have been produced in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Austin, Miami, Denver, Tucson, Albuquerque and regionally across the country. Among my full-length plays, my new comedy, THE RIMSKY-FOGELMAN is currently a Semi-Finalist for the 2023 O’Neill National Playwrights Conference; LEONARDO’S VIRGIN was a Final Round Nominee for the American Association of Community Theatre 2023 New Play Competition and will be excerpted in The Best Men’s Stage Monologues, 2023 (Smith & Kraus); SHYLOCK THE FIRST was a “Top 6” Winner of the Dayton Playhouse FutureFest 2021 and is excerpted in The Best Men’s Stage Monologues, 2020; The Best Men’s Stage Monologues, 2022; The Best Women’s Stage Monologues, 2022 (Smith & Kraus); GREAT ROLES FOR OLD ACTRESSES is excerpted in Best Women's Monologues of 2019 (Smith & Kraus) and The Best Women’s Monologues from New Plays, 2019 (Applause Theatre & Cinema Books); DELETING DAD won the Texas Nonprofit Theatres' 2016 New Play Project competition; THE INVENTION OF THE LIVING ROOM won the Texas Nonprofit Theatres' 2014 New Play Project competition, was a Finalist (First Runner-Up) for the 2012 Blue Ink Playwriting Award (American Blues Theater), is excerpted in The Best Women’s Stage Monologues, 2015 (Smith & Kraus), and chosen for the Orlando Shakespeare Theater’s Playfest! The Harriet Lake Festival of New Plays; MOSES, THE AUTHOR, a comedy, was produced at the 2014 New York International Fringe Festival, chosen for the Fringe Encore Series and for the Orlando Shakespeare Theater's 2014 Playfest!
