I am pursuing a career in education in order to empower young people to make decisions that are in their own best interests. I believe that providing people with the knowledge to take care of themselves and their community, and the creativity and critical thinking skills to make decisions in the face of uncertainty, will create a population of healthier people. Healthy, informed people are more capable of making sound decisions that reduce negative externalities. Technology has exponentially increased our access to information, which used to be siloed in elite institutions. Today, anyone with an internet connection can learn from the foremost leaders of a given industry or discipline. Children today do not suffer from a scarcity of information, but rather an excess of it. Misinformation and disinformation are abundant, which requires that people are skilled in the ability to sort out relevant and trustworthy information. Self-control, discipline, and emotional regulation have become more important, because people have access to limitless distraction and avoidance at their finger tips. It is less important for a teacher to be a content expert, because there will most likely be a better content expert accessible through technology. Cultivation of healthy relationships, stoking natural curiosity, and engaging the student in a journey of self-discovery more fully prepares a student for the realities of the 21st century, where technology threatens most conventional job titles. A 21st century worker needs to be adaptable and flexible in order to learn new skills midway through their careers, because the increasing pace of technological innovation will quickly make their acquired skills irrelevant or redundant. Skills that seem most resilient to artificial intelligence are emotional intelligence, social skills, and creativity. These qualities should therefore be emphasized in education.
