During my PhD I studied and modelled the interactions of distant stars and planets. Now I repurpose the same skills to make a difference closer to home, which I am currently doing as a Quantitative Analyst at Oxford Asset Management. Depending on the task at hand this may require a range of different tools, but inevitably it will involve python (especially NumPy and pandas), data visualisation, and a willingness to challenge your assumptions. Regardless of the tool, it always requires an ability to clarify the core of the problem - breaking it down to understand exactly what questions we’re asking, before working out how best we can go about answering them. Most of all, I am keen to keep on creatively tackling difficult problems, collaborating to develop and improve ideas as a team, and making a positive difference to the world.
Physics tutor for undergraduates at the University of Oxford, teaching classical mechanics, analogue electronics and fluid mechanics to first, second, and third year students respectively. This included tailoring the tutorials for the students in order to best consolidate their learning, correct areas of misunderstanding, and stretch their view of the topic in question.
I undertook both administrative and organizational tasks whilst the larger term-time apprentice team were absent, including taking responsibility for overseeing the use of the church for weddings throughout the summer.
I was responsible for a cabin of 20-30 kids, day and night, leading them through all manner of activities, from archery and climbing to arts and crafts. I was voted "Best Male Counsellor" by my peers.
