Andreas Schindler

Global Editorial Content Manager at Hearst Magazines International

New York, New York, United States

About

I'm an experienced photo researcher, licensing specialist and digital archivist based in New York City. After working for eight years on staff for London textbook publisher Hodder Education I moved to New York in 2015. Since then I have been freelancing for several book publishers, but I'm also interested in longer projects or staff positions. While working as a photo researcher I developed great relationships with all major photo agencies, museums, history archives, PR agencies and individual photographers. I'm used to source photos, artworks, cartoons and illustrations for subject matters ranging from history and science to psychology and business. I'm bilingual (English and German) and have international work experience and connections.

Experience

  • International Content Editor at Hearst Magazines International
    Jun 2018 - Present · 8 yrs 1 mo

As part of the international content team I've been assigned the "Enthusiast" group of magazines: Bicycling, Popular Mechanics, Runner's World and parts of Men's Health. I work with their international editions: if Men's Health Germany or Men's Health UK is planning to pick up an article from Men's Health US I'll check rights status for images and text and forward the content to the international editors. In some cases I need to re-negotiate with photo sources or clear permission with celebrity's agents. This job also has an "archival" side: every month I'm adding rights to new issues of the magazines I'm assigned to, by entering credits and rights information into the in-house DAM system Atlas. Working in magazine publishing I'm learning a lot of new things about sharing content, handling celebrity content and editorial rights & permissions. The team is great and I'm enjoying working with international editors.

  • Photo Researcher (Freelance) at Pearson
    Jun 2016 - Jun 2018 · 2 yrs 1 mo

Pearson was one of my main clients as a freelancer, I worked off-site for their UK division. Main tasks were sourcing and licensing images for various textbook titles, print & digital; I controlled budgets, sent out invoice requests and entered copyright & rights information into their company database.

  • Photo Researcher (Freelance) at Living Language
    Apr 2016 - Jun 2018 · 2 yrs 3 mos

Working at their office I selected and re-sized microstock photos for use in digital flash cards of language titles. They were a fairly regular client of mine, I sourced images for their monthly blog and other projects.

  • Photo Researcher (Freelance) at Bloomsbury USA
    May 2017 - Jun 2017 · 2 mos

The latest project for Bloomsbury (UK this time) was sourcing and clearing images for a photography book, which included contacting artists, studios, galleries and museums. The project included modern as well as artists from the last century, which provided for an exciting mix. For an earlier project for Bloomsbury US last year I sourced a selection of images for possible use on the cover of a history title about the French Legion.
