About

Andreas Schaal is the Director of OECD Global Relations and the OECD Sherpa to the G7, the G20 and APEC. Between September 2024 and January 2025 he was also serving as Acting Special Representative of the OECD to the United Nations in New York. He was also an assigned Panel Member of the UN Secretary-Generals Panel on Critical Minerals. Being part of OECD Management Leadership team, he coordinates the OECD’s contributions to Global Governance under the leadership and in support of OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann. In close coordination with OECD Members and the OECD’s External Relations Committee, he and his team implement the OECD’s Global Relations Strategy with over 100 partner countries around the globe on ministerial level; aiming at making OECD standards and policies count on a global scale and, thus, contributing to a global level playing field. Andreas expertise includes two decades of conceptional and strategic work on foreign affairs, national, international and global economic policy and global governance. In this capacity, he is responsible for the OECD’s relations with Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and South Africa as well as with the following growing regions, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, South East Europe, Eurasia, Middle East and North Africa (MENA). He supports the Secretary-General’s objectives for a regionally inclusive and globally relevant organisation. The OECD Global Relations Secretariat, which he oversees and manages, includes 100+ team members.

      Andreas Schaal is the Director of OECD Global Relations and the OECD Sherpa to the G7, the G20 and APEC; which is an equivalent function to a Director-General in a national administration. In support of the OECD’s Secretary-General Mathias Cormann and in close coordination with the OECD's External Relations Committee, he leads and coordinates the external policy and relations of the OECD with over 100 partner countries of the OECD. In this capacity, he is responsible for the OECD’s relations with Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and South Africa as well as with the following growing regions, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, South East Europe, Eurasia and Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Starting in 2022, the OECD Secretary-General appointed Andreas as OECD Sherpa to the G7, the G20 and APEC. In this function Andreas coordinates OECD's support for the G20 Presidencies of Indonesia (2022), India (2023), Brazil (2024) and South Africa (2025) and creates synergies with the German G7 Presidency (2022), Thailand’s APEC Host Year (2022) and Indonesia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN (2023). He oversees OECD Country Programmes with Morocco, Egypt, Viet Nam and Thailand. He supports the Secretary- General’s objectives for a regionally inclusive and globally relevant organization. The OECD Global Relations Secretariat, which Andreas leads and oversees, includes around 100 team members.
