Prof. Dr. Andreas M. Müller studied in Basel and in Paris. After his studies, he completed a one-year doctorate at the AO Institute in Davos. He completed his basic training in general surgery in 2003/4 at the Triemlispital, Zurich. He then moved to the University Hospital of Basel, where he completed his residency in orthopedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system in 2009. During his postgraduate training, he took a research year in the local tissue engineering laboratory. For his work on intraoperative bone formation using adipose-derived stem cells, he received the Dirk Schaefer Research Award. In 2011, he completed a research year in shoulder biomechanics at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center ( Harvard Medical School) in Boston (USA) with a specific focus on the effects of shoulder injuries on glenohumeral translations. Upon his return to the University Hospital Basel in 2012, he became the teamleader of shoulder and elbow surgery. At the same time, he was promoted to the head of the side facility Bethesda which he had to build from scratch. He completed his habilitation on bone strength and bone augmentation in 2014. In 2019 he was promoted to the Deputy head of the Orthopaedic Department at the University Hospital of Basel. He received a titular professorship in orthopaedics and traumatology in 2020. Clinical, biomechanical and regenerative projects in the field of rotator cuff reconstruction form his main research focus. His research is funded by two grants of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Prof. Müller is an executive board member of the swiss national society of orthopaedic surgeons ( Swiss Orthopaedics) and of AGA, the largest German-speaking Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Reconstruction.
