Legal adviser to South African delegations to inter alia the African Union, Southern African Development Community, United Nations General Assembly, Kimberley Process on Conflict Diamonds, Transfrontier Peace Parks negotiations, Lesotho Highland Water Scheme Phase II negotiations, International Committee of the Red Cross, Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court; principal negotiator on the definition of and conditions for exercise of jurisdiction over the Crime of Aggression in terms of the Rome Statute
Job description: • Advising the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and other Government departments and institutions and Parliament on international law and its application • Representing the South African Government in international, regional and bilateral negotiations on issues relating to international law • Participating in international meetings, conferences, seminars and workshops relating to international law topics • Drafting and negotiating international legal instruments • Drafting legislation to give effect to South Africa’s international obligations and commitments • Liaising with decision-makers, representatives of foreign governments, academic institutions, the legal profession and civil society on matters pertaining to international law • Coordination of, advising and assisting with litigation on international law matters in domestic and international courts • Liaising with and reporting on international legal institutions in The Hague, International Criminal Court, International Court of Justice, International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, Permanent Court of Arbitration, Hague Conference on Private International Law
