About

Biochemistry PhD with a strong background in biotechnology, microbiology and enzymology. Over the course of my PhD, I have gained expertise in protein biochemistry, including culturing of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, protein purification, enzyme assay development and cryo-EM structural biology, specifically of nitrogenase-like systems. I have over five years of international education and research experience across Germany, Denmark, and Spain on the topics of microbial plastic degradation and enzymatic plastic monomer production. During this time, I have developed an excellent command of the English and Spanish languages in scientific communications. I graduated with first-class honours in both my BSc and MSc degrees, and the findings of my PhD project have been published in the high-impact journal Nature Catalysis. I have great attention to detail, an analytical mindset, and a collaborative personality.

Experience

  • Industrial Postdoc at Novonesis
    May 2026 - Present · 2 mos

Designing and developing multi-enzyme cascades for the transformation of biomass into chemical building blocks for the bioplastics industry.

  • PhD Candidate at Max-Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology
    Sep 2022 - Feb 2026 · 3 yrs 6 mos

My PhD project is on the characterization of the methylthio-alkane reductase from Rhodospirillum rubrum, an anaerobic enzyme that produces small hydrocarbons from volatile sulfur compounds. This enzyme has spurred interest in biotechnology for its potential application in the sustainable production of ethylene. It is phylogenetically related to one of Earth's oldest metalloenzymes, nitrogenase, with which it shares some of the most complex iron-sulfur clusters known in nature. I conducted this research at the Microbial Metalloenzymes group by Dr. Johannes Rebelein. Lab skills: culturing and transformation of Escherichia coli, Rhodobacter capsulatus & R. rubrum, Golden Gate and Gibson cloning, anaerobic protein purification in ÄKTA Pure system, affinity chromatography, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), SDS-PAGE, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Single Particle CryoEM, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Spectroscopy.

  • Student Assistant at Usercentrics
    Sep 2020 - Jun 2022 · 1 yr 10 mos

I worked as a student assistant at the Communications team of Cookiebot Consent Management Platform from Usercentrics (former Cybot). I was responsible for all of Cookiebot's Spanish content, including banners, websites, blogposts, ads and link-building efforts.

  • Master's thesis at Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen
    Sep 2021 - May 2022 · 9 mos

My master’s thesis project was on the isolation of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) degrading bacterium to find new plastic degrading enzymes at the Microbial interactions group by Dr. Mette Haubjerg Nicolaisen. I was co-supervised by Dr. Rosanna Catherine Hennessy and Dr. Kenneth Jensen from Novonesis (former Novozymes). Lab skills: bacterial enrichment culture, Adaptive Laboratory Evolution (ALE), selective plate screening, Shotgun Sequencing and Metagenomic analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS), colorimetric and fluorometric enzyme activity assays.

  • Research assistant at Universidad de Salamanca
    Oct 2019 - Jun 2020 · 9 mos

I received a Collaborative Research Grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational Formation to work as a research assistant at the Microbiology and Genetics Department of the University of Salamanca. In the group of Pedro San Segundo Nieto and Beatriz Santos Romero I studied the control of chromosome dynamics during gametogenesis, focusing on the regulation of the AAA+ ATPase Pch2, a pachytene checkpoint protein from Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
