Advise private collectors, dealers, and museums. Research, write, and lecture about Old Master and 19th-century paintings, including a private collection of thirty 19th-century paintings and a collection of Dutch marine paintings.
Research Nazi-era provenance questions and claims for museums and private collectors. Clients include the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Birmingham Museum of Art, as well as major private collectors.
Primarily responsible for Northern European Paintings, including the Mr. and Mrs. Edward W. Carter Collection of Dutch Paintings, working closely with conservation department. Wrote online catalogue of French oil sketches and scholarly catalogue of the Carter Collection. Coauthor of three-volume scholarly catalogue of "Gifts of European Art from The Ahmanson Foundation."
Researched permanent collection, potential acquisitions, and loans to and from LACMA for possible illegal transfer during the Nazi era. Negotiated the return from LACMA of a Persian tapestry to the Princes Czartoryski Museum, Cracow. Internationally recognized leader in the field. Co-author of The AAM Guide to Provenance Research, considered "the Bible of provenance research."
With the support of a Getty Publication Grant, researched and wrote the scholarly catalogue of the Northern European Paintings at the Norton Simon Museum, including 93 Dutch, Flemish, English, and German works. Publication forthcoming.
