Recently graduated with First Class Honours in Natural Sciences from University College London (UCL). Extensive employment and volunteering experience within outdoor-animal based careers, predominantly veterinary related. Current academic focus on ecology, evolution, sedimentology, palaeontology and mineral resources. Previous academic background in anatomy, animal welfare, and husbandry. Working across varied industries and completing a broad-ranging degree has made me highly adaptable, a proficient problem solver and confident in tackling unfamiliar challenges. I am an adventurous and outdoorsy individual who enjoys working as part of a team. My natural curiosity and passion to understand our environment and biodiversity have harboured a desire to aid its protection. Studying Natural Sciences has led me to develop the lateral thinking required to tackle such complex issues, an aptitude I believe will make me a valuable team member in the multidisciplinary field of environmental consultancy. Student member of CIEEM, British Ecological Society and GSL. Wildlife volunteer with the National Trust, Fountains Abbey. University modules heavily data and field-based, including a tropical biodiversity field course and geological mapping. Proficient with data analysis, especially spatial analysis. I am confident producing maps and modelling within ArcGIS and R, as well as the use of Google Earth Pro for remote sensing. I enjoy spending time in nature, mountaineering, cycling, or working on my photography skills!
Beech house is an independent, small animal practice but we also occasionally accepted wildlife and stray emergencies brought in by the public. Reception: answering calls, emails, booking appointments, using the online diary system, repeat prescriptions, dealing with emergencies, answering client queries, first port of call for clients and advice. Animal care assistant: helping with the day-to-day running of a busy hospital, including prepping for surgeries, cleaning kennels, sterilising equipment, cleaning rooms and equipment to meet hospital standards, looking after the animals in our care, animal handling, running in-house tests. Prompt, clear communication, prioritisation, and professionalism were important for my front-facing roles at Beech House. I worked at three of their practices, so I had to integrate quickly into each practice's team. I became very close to the Beech House team and was offered a permanent position.
Organising lessons and / or home schooling curriculum, encouraging active learning, engaging beyond the core curriculum, one-to-one teaching, specialist support. I ran one to one tutoring sessions / home schooling support for local primary school children with learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorders. I took responsibility for promoting my services, and planning individually tailored lessons. Alongside the core curriculum, I encouraged my pupils to learn about science, the environment and our world. I incorporated active learning where possible, to learn through experiencing nature and the outdoors. I am occasionally still contacted for tutoring help.
The Change the World Model United Nations (CWMUN) is an international Model UN programme attended by over 5,000 students from all around the world to debate current issues within international politics. I attended the virtual Change the World Model UN (CWVMUN) during the pandemic, where I represented China in the UN General Assembly on "Fighting misinformation and fake news during the Covid-19 pandemic". This experience was highly valuable to me, I learned a lot about public speaking and managed to achieve the Best Delegate Award. In addition our team (Team B) won the final overall competition ranking.
After leaving Edinburgh I worked within the Equine Industry, across three high profile yards. Duties included all those expected with the daily care of large competition yards / breeders, including sole-charge, mucking out, feeding, turn-out, grooming, tacking up, schooling, hacking, jumping, competition riding, lunging, monitoring for health and injury, planning training plans, travel and show days. I was frequently responsible for sole charge of yards with up to 20 horses, so time-management and using my initiative were crucial skills. The ability to work outside, year-round in all conditions is also essential. Confident driving 3.5T vehicles.
Summer job working as a groom for YRC, the FEI and Olympic equestrian eventing training venue.
