Description: Research Project related to agriculture that involved monitoring various parameters such as temperature, pressure, humidity and soil moisture in semi arid regions of Karnataka. Some of the challenges faced were lack of electricity, lack of skilled labor and a distant terrain. These parameters were measured with the help of nodes that were deployed in a field within a radius of over 1 sq km. A local data hub was set up in the field to collect data from different nodes and had a wi-fi antenna which transmitted this data to the central server that was set up at IISc via local area network. Roles and Responsibilities • Writing embedded code using an event driven language called nesC (Network Embedded Systems C) to sense various parameters related to agriculture. • Web hosting of the commonSense application using PHP and python scripts. • Worked on a routing algorithm called Collection Tree Protocol (CTP). • With CTP nodes that could not communicate with the central base station, sent data via multihop. • The data captured on the central server was made available on the web www.commonsense.net to all users around the world. • Worked on antenna propagation to analyze various considerations that have to be made while deploying a node in the field. Some of them are height of the antenna from the ground, direction of the antenna, transmission power that needs to be set, exact distance between 2 nodes. Also observed the behavior of Omni-directional antennas that matched with Schmidt’s chart. • Worked on calculating Bit Error Ratio (BER) and Packet Error Ratio (PER).
