As Chief Technology Officer, I was entasked to oversees all technical aspects and technological resources of the organization, for the purpose of organizational growth. I was also entrusted to develop the technological vision for the organization and lead the company's technological development for in-house development and solutions. Within the role, I was able to conduct research to improve the technological assets of the company as well as oversees development budgets to make sure there are no unnecessary expenditures. As security was of paramount concern, I developed and directed all networking safeguards to reduce the risk of outside breaches and protect sensitive internal and external client information. Regarding internal security, I developed and implemented all internal communication systems, such as email and instant messaging to ensure no company information was linked to personal accounts. I was heavily involved in the development and possible implementation of policies in instances of a breach, as part of the disaster recovery plans. In any technology-based company, planning and implements proper Internet usage policies for employees was important as well as managing all digital media assets. I was heavily involved in evaluating new technology and makes recommendations on technological solutions, as well as using technological assets to help ease use for employees and clients. I consistently evaluated the technical efficiency and made changes as necessary from both an equipment and staffing aspect. As this role was not only internally facing, but external, I made presentations to board of directors and CEO's of various companies, as well as other key stakeholders, developed and enhances the company's website to increase site traffic, as well as identified competitive advantages and technological trends for the benefit of our organization.
As CIO with 5 direct reports, I observed all aspects of the business in a broad nature and gave direction for IT Projects/Planning as well as mentoring staff. I was able to accomplish Information Technology staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures. I maintained staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees; maintaining a safe and secure work environment; as well as developing personal growth opportunities. I also was required to maintain the organization's effectiveness and efficiency by defining, delivering, and supporting strategic plans for implementing information technologies. Directing technological research was done by studying organization goals, strategies, practices, and user projects. I also completed projects by coordinating resources and timetables with user departments and data center as well as verifying application results by conducting system audits of technologies implemented.
As IT Manager, my main directive was to maintain Information Technology strategies by managing staff; researching and implementing technological strategic solutions. My operational duties included, scoping solutions with management teams, advising business units on where IT might make a difference to the business and if the advice was taken on board, planning the stages projects and how each affects the business. When implementing a project, I was responsible for calculating costs, timescales and standards to be met as well as coordinating the project teams, internal and external to IT. As there are always variations that occur during projects, due to organizational changes, or unforeseen events, adjusting implementations using a hands-on approach where needed and ensuring smooth changeovers from legacy to new systems. Most importantly, keeping senior management and users updated on progress and evaluation of each project stage and its completion ensured there was a sense of ownership from all parties involved. Outside of project work, I ensured that assets were preserved by implementing disaster recovery and back-up procedures, as well as developing information security and control structures. Using Group policy and MDM tools, I was able to maintain quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards.
The customer service skills I gained from this position, will potentially be the most important skill I have learnt and used in my career. No matter the size of your business, excellent customer service needs be at the heart of your business model if you wish to be successful. It is important to provide good customer service to all types of customers, including potential, new and existing customers. I was taught to treat your customers respectfully, follow up on customer feedback, handling complaints and returns gracefully, understanding customers' needs and wants, exceeding customer expectations as well as going out of your way to help them.
I am involved in the design, installation, testing and maintenance of software systems. Key software development projects I was involved in include: Telstra Webphone KX internet kiosk and wireless hot spots Linux Kernel driver development Credit Card payment gateways Firefox extension development Development was primarily in C/C++/Perl/Qt4/Javascript/Bash. Through this position I gained extensive experience in producing highly readable and well commented code, as well as gaining a very intimate understanding of the linux kernel and other open source technologies.
