About

I lead one of the largest dedicated State & Local Tax practices in the country, and building this team has been the most rewarding work of my career. We call it NOW-SALT. 55+ professionals across 15+ offices covering every major SALT discipline: income/franchise tax, sales/use tax, property tax, credits & incentives, local business taxes, and unclaimed property. One national platform built to move fast, think big, and deliver real results. Our mission: unlock the true value and potential of every client, every opportunity, and every team member. We built this from scratch in 2019 inside Armanino, one of the 20 largest accounting and consulting firms in the U.S. and a nine-time ClearlyRated Best of Accounting winner. It works because we genuinely care about our people, our clients, and each other. Team-first culture, selfless tenacity, commitment to excellence, and a relentless drive to get better. I bring 25+ years of hands-on multistate tax experience. Before Armanino, I served as EY's Seattle SALT Practice Leader and PwC's SoCal SALT M&A Practice Leader, with additional experience at Deloitte and Arthur Andersen. That Big Four foundation shaped how I think about quality and teams, but Armanino is where I found the freedom to do it differently. We serve clients across tech, financial services, retail, media & entertainment, manufacturing, pharma, telecom, e-commerce, construction, cannabis, crypto, utilities, and government contracting. Capabilities include unitary/consolidated filings, M&A consulting, restructuring, apportionment planning, ASC 740 review, audit defense, residency audits, nonresident withholding, nexus studies, and voluntary disclosure negotiations. I've also represented clients in local tax controversies with the City of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other California municipalities. I love teaching this stuff almost as much as doing it. I've lectured for the LA County Bar Association, TEI, California Tax Bar, Strafford, and COST, where I instructed COST's SALT Basics School on the Unitary Business Principle and Apportionment. I've co-authored numerous articles and recorded a podcast on CA local taxes available on Apple Podcasts. Admitted in California, New York, Connecticut, D.C., and U.S. Tax Court. J.D. from UConn Law, B.A. from Boston College. When I'm not working, I'm probably exploring somewhere new with my wife and four daughters. I'm also proud to serve as State Chancellor of the Michigan Society, Sons of the American Revolution. Navigating multistate complexity or looking to optimize your SALT position? Let's connect.

  • Strategic Advisor at LOONALM
    Mar 2016 - Feb 2019 · 3 yrs

LOONALM is a boutique law firm founded by my family in 1998. From 2016 to 2019, I helped lead the most significant expansion, growth, and modernization in the firm's 25+ year history while maintaining the outstanding client service the firm was built on. It was a different kind of challenge than Big Four tax work, and that was the point. I got to roll up my sleeves, build systems, grow the business, and serve clients in a deeply personal practice area. The experience reinforced something I already believed: great client service and smart business building aren't separate things. They're the same thing. That builder mindset is what I carried into Armanino when I founded the SALT practice in 2019.

  • Pacific Northwest State & Local Tax Services Leader at EY
    Nov 2012 - Mar 2016 · 3 yrs 5 mos

I led EY's Seattle Global Indirect & State Tax Services Practice, overseeing multistate tax consulting, planning, and controversy across the Pacific Northwest. It was a role that combined everything I care about: building a team, growing a client base, and delivering technical work that actually moves the needle for clients. Prior to leading the Seattle practice, I served as a Tax Counseling Family Leader in EY's Los Angeles office and also led EY's Seattle Latino Professional Network. I consistently managed teams of 5-10 tax professionals across the Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles markets. My client work spanned income/franchise tax, sales/use tax, local business taxes, and credits & incentives across a wide range of industries including tech, retail, media & entertainment, pharma, manufacturing, telecom, e-commerce, construction, engineering, government contracting, and financial services. Engagements included unitary/consolidated filings, M&A consulting and due diligence, restructuring, apportionment planning, ASC 740 review, audit defense, transaction analysis, residency audits, nonresident withholding, nexus studies, and voluntary disclosure negotiations. Honors: • 2014 EY State & Local Tax Client Service Team of the Year – Team Leader The experience of building and leading a regional SALT practice inside a global firm is what ultimately gave me the confidence to do it on a much larger scale when I founded Armanino's national SALT practice in 2019.

  • Senior Manager at Deloitte - Los Angeles, CA
    Sep 2010 - Nov 2012 · 2 yrs 3 mos

I spent my Deloitte years in Los Angeles, focused on multistate income/franchise tax consulting, planning, and controversy. This is where I developed the deep local business tax expertise that has defined much of my career. I became the go-to resource for LA City Business Tax matters and represented clients in complex local tax controversies across California municipalities. It was also where I found my voice as a teacher. I began lecturing regularly for organizations like COST, where I presented on apportionment issues and current developments at the Pacific Southwest Regional Meetings. I also recorded my first podcast on Los Angeles City Business Taxes, which is still available on Apple Podcasts. My client work continued to span multistate income/franchise tax, sales/use tax, local business taxes, and credits & incentives across a broad range of industries. The technical foundation I built during this chapter gave me the depth and confidence to step into practice leadership roles that followed. Beyond the technical work, Deloitte is where I learned how much I love developing people. Being recognized as Mentor of the Year confirmed something I already felt: helping others grow is the most rewarding part of this profession. Honors: • 2011 Deloitte Mentor of the Year Award • 2011 Deloitte Multistate Development Conference Award for Excellence – Innovation

  • Director at PwC - Los Angeles, CA
    May 2004 - Sep 2010 · 6 yrs 5 mos

I served as PwC's Southern California SALT M&A Practice Leader and National Local Business Activity Tax Leader, based in Los Angeles. It was my first real leadership platform, and it taught me what it means to own a practice area inside a global firm. On the M&A side, I advised clients on state and local tax implications of mergers, acquisitions, and restructurings, including due diligence, transaction structuring, and post-close integration planning. As the national lead for local business activity taxes, I built deep expertise in the city-level tax controversies and compliance challenges that would later become a hallmark of my career. My client work spanned income/franchise tax, sales/use tax, local business taxes, and credits & incentives across tech, retail, media & entertainment, pharma, manufacturing, telecom, e-commerce, construction, engineering, government contracting, and financial services. Beyond client work, I co-chaired the 2010 PwC United Way EITC Campaign at El Centro del Pueblo VITA site, for which I was recognized with a Service Award from the United Way, El Centro del Pueblo, and the California Controller's Office. Honors: • Nominated for the PwC Chairman's Award (2007 and 2009) • 2007 Coaching Award – PwC Great Place to Work Committee • 2010 United Way Service Award – Co-Chair, EITC Campaign at El Centro del Pueblo PwC is where I learned that great leadership starts with great coaching, and that building trust with clients and teams is the foundation for everything else.
