- Using active listening techniques to answer calls and instant messages during night duties from callers who may want to talk about anything on their mind, including exploring sensitive topics like suicide - Developing empathy in others by delivering active listening training in smaller groups of up to 20, many of whom go on to deliver peer-to-peer welfare sessions for students in other settings, like in societies. - Interviewing a number of prospective volunteers each term, helping to build their confidence in using the active listening techniques before their potential onboarding.
- Overseeing all operations, including volunteer management and relations, all committee roles, day-to-day running of the service and management of the budget and accounts. - Communicating with external stakeholders, including Durham Students' Union, Durham University and Nightline Europe, as well as creating a welcoming and inclusive community atmosphere for volunteers to feel as comfortable as possible. - Maintaining an expansive policy, guideline and documentation directory, ensuring compliance with GDPR and other legal obligations. - Overseeing all training and recruitment processes, including external training for up to 150 students each term, as well as internal training and communicating with relevant external organisations to be able to deliver our multi-award-winning training, such as the Durham University Student Conduct Office and Durham Samaritans.
- Preparing and delivering Nightline's multi-award winning active listening training for students each term, being responsible for training students in roles involving peer-to-peer welfare across Durham University. - Giving large-scale talks to up to 100 students on the foundations of active listening, the techniques, and how Nightline operates at our termly training weekend. - Overseeing the recruitment process by preparing current volunteers to train prospective volunteers, and giving them interview training to ensure that we can build the confidence of applicants during the recruitment process. - Providing a space for all volunteers to practise their skills after they join Nightline, and delivering training to volunteers who have taken breaks from duties to ensure Nightline's service remains consistent.
- Teaching GCSE and A Level Maths across all abilities and levels. - Building confidence for students and parents, as well as increasing engagement within their existing school classes by providing the opportunity for one-to-one support and asking for help with anything they require - Aiding in the run-up to exams and mock exams by providing past papers, helping mark them and providing detailed feedback for students in order to assist them in their revision
- Providing quality feedback to around 20 students in lower years on their formative Statistical Inference assignments through Gradescope. - Building confidence by reinforcing positives, whilst highlighting areas for improvement. - Assisting students in presenting academic mathematics and statistics by helping target areas of weakness.
- Connecting with a wide contributor base, commissioning articles, and editing these to display in the print edition and online to a readership base of up to 20,000 students. - Manipulating real-world data and using visualisation software such as Flourish to deliver engaging statistical points in my own long-read articles. - Collaborating with the rest of the Politics team and the senior editorial team to lay up pages for the print paper using Adobe InDesign, as well as resolving minor legal issues. - Creating bespoke social media content with Adobe Photoshop for use on the Palatinate Politics Instagram account and Contributor Facebook Group.
- Welcoming prospective students and their parents/guardians to St Mary's College, providing them with a welcoming and friendly face to talk to, and answering any questions they might have. - Leading tours of College so that students can see where they might be living, the facilities that Durham colleges are able to offer, as well as talking to large groups of people about the wider student experience at the University. - Providing further signposting to groups to ensure that their open days run as smoothly as possible.
