I am currently working as a Research Scientist II at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, Basel, within the Pharmacokinetic Sciences (PKS) department. I support different In Vitro ADME projects and I am specialised in drug permeability assays.
As a biosample lab associate, my responsibilities are to manage the Roche Clinical Repository, to process human serum and plasma samples to generate aliquots or pools for downstream analysis. Besides I also process clinical blood samples to extract nucleic acids such as RNA or DNA and to separate cell types (PBMC) from fresh samples. These processes are conducted following Good Clinical Practices and several SOPs. I am also the single point of contact for biosafety, health and safety related topics within the Roche Clinical Repository, Basel.
Within the Drug Transport group (Pharmaceutical Sciences department), I was responsible for conducting different cell-based and cell-free assays to study the uptake and the transport of compounds. Besides I have also performed assays to measure the stability of compounds in vitro. This involved mammalian cell culture, cell treatment and lab automation.
My duties mainly implied mammalian cell culture with the aim of testing glucose-lowering compounds. This work encompassed many cell and molecular biology techniques such as cell strain maintenance, assay development, cell treatment, glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, ELISA test, apoptosis assay and fluorometry. I have also supported projects by performing nucleic acid isolation and qPCR.
Master internship in a molecular biology lab. Master thesis title: “Lipid and cholesterol homeostasis gene expression changes in dyslipidemic vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops), an animal model for atherosclerosis”. Gene and protein expression profiling of primate monocytes and H295R/THP-1 cells using qPCR and western-blot techniques.
