✅ Established a $1.1M health services research program funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA). ▶️ Used quantitative methods, qualitative interviews, surveys, and stakeholder engagement to study and improve care coordination and communication regarding interhospital transfers of EGS patients. ▶️ Led a team of seven researchers with biostatistics, programming, sociology, and health services backgrounds.
✅ Selected to serve as the emergency general surgery program's Associate Medical Director to develop and execute hospital-wide policies, procedures, and services. ✅ Exclusively chaired and co-led numerous projects and committees to improve patient care, including: ▶️ Coordinated Care for Critically Ill Patients: Spearheaded and led the initiative to develop a system to notify and assemble coordinated care teams. ▶️ COVID Critical Care Team Education Task Force: Led a four-person task force and coordinated the development of educational materials, protocols, and shadowing opportunities for physicians who typically do not care for acute care surgical patients. –Identified and collaborated with stakeholders encompassing 40+ unique roles. –Captured stakeholder feedback, modified process maps, and conducted complete process flow testing using orchestrated tabletop simulation sessions before going live. ▶️ EGS Protocol Development Committee: Co-chaired a six-member interdisciplinary team in designing and executing standardized patient care protocols that impacted ~2,100+ patients annually. ▶️ EGS Peer Review Committee: Co-chaired a multi-disciplinary team responsible for analyzing adverse care events, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing strategies. ▶️ American College of Surgeons (ACS) EGS Verification Program Application & Award: Co-led the successful application and subsequent award for having a quality surgical program focused on the care and treatment of patients undergoing emergency general surgical care – only one of five hospitals with this recognition. –Compiled data on administrative commitment, program scope and governance, data surveillance and systems, and quality improvement. ✅ Served as an acute care surgeon at a 625-bed Level 1 trauma, academic, and regional referral hospital and staffed the emergency general surgery service line at a 419-bed community hospital with various medical and surgical services.
✅ Served on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) EGS Technical Expert Panel for the Improving Surgical Care and Recovery Program to improve patient outcomes and experiences and reduce hospital stays by implementing enhanced recovery practices. ▶️ Provided expert guidance and edits to enhanced recovery pathways as well as program variables and definitions. ▶️ Co-created Patient Education Booklets with medical professionals, patients, and literacy experts.
