My role entails working as part of the civil service in a permanent government job as part of the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) – we work across job centers in the U.K. My role includes supporting those whom are in receipt of income related government benefits namely Universal Credit (UC) whilst they are either experiencing unemployment or under-employment. Through effective coaching & support, we aim to allow the transition from either unemployment/underemployment to hopefully allow for some form of employment & potential gainful employment to be as smooth as possible. To accomplish this endeavour, we aim to identify any potential barriers which may be holding individuals from being able to quickly transition into some of form of employment – this can entail skill set mismatch/marketable skills deficit, lack of prior qualifications, health related difficulties or even potential language barriers or limited experience/exposure in relation to the employment/job market. We also understand & support those whom may not be able to work on account of family related commitments e.g. caring for young children, partners etc... but also those whom are either long-term unemployed or experiencing long-term sickness. We use bespoke computer systems as part of our job role & employ a variety of techniques to work with claimants of UC to set goals & commitments for themselves whilst they are on their individual journeys whilst also giving structured but also tailored guidance to see how they can progress with things. We also help to facilitate & can allow claimants to find employment and/or training opportunities & can also help with funding support on a discretionary basis subject to adherence to departmental guidance & procedures.
