Adrian Yee Cheng Yong received his Bachelor of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering, specialising in Artificial Intelligence, with Second Class Honours Division A from Monash University Malaysia in 2023. He was awarded the Monash University High Achiever Award from 2019 to 2022 for maintaining a weighted average above 75% and was the Second Runner-Up for the Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Semester 1 2023 Final Year Project Best Video Award. He is included in the Faculty of Engineering Dean’s Honours List for achieving a weighted average above 80% throughout the 2022 academic year. During his 3rd year, he was offered the opportunity to join the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, where he conducted research on the Modelling of Microgrids for Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading. Adrian Cheng Yong Yee would describe himself as a self-starter, effective team player with good communication skills and high sense of responsibility.
I was offered the opportunity to conduct research with a postdoctoral fellow. The research aimed to expand the scope of my final-year undergraduate project, which focused on modelling observers for robust and efficient peer-to-peer energy distribution in microgrids. This research encompasses various areas, including renewable energy generation, the impact of partial shading on photovoltaic cells, and the implementation of boost converters for maximum power point tracking. The primary goal of this project is to develop a comprehensive microgrid model that incorporates renewable energy generation and storage elements, while optimizing maximum power point tracking, especially in the presence of partial shading conditions.
I was offered the opportunity to join the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program in August 2021 for two semesters. The research focused on modelling microgrids for peer-to-peer energy trading, specifically developing a general model of generation and storage behaviour at each node using MATLAB Simulink. I learned a lot of research-related skills during the duration of the program which includes literature review and drafting a report regarding my research. The microgrid model consists of an energy generation element, a load, an energy storage component, and an interface with the grid. We model the energy storage component as a photovoltaic cell of the KC200GT solar array type, while the battery storage system is based on the AGM lead-acid battery bank. The load is modelled as a constant power load.
