Homburg, Saarland, Germany
I received my medical degree (MD) from the University of Mainz, Germany, in 2002, following medical studies in Mainz and at Tulane University in New Orleans, USA. I completed my postdoctoral training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, where my research focused on signaling pathways underlying acute and chronic liver injury, with a particular emphasis on metabolic liver disease and MASH. From 2004 to 2024, I worked as a clinician-scientist and hepatology consultant at the University Medical Center Mainz. I am board-certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and infectious diseases. I was appointed Assistant Professor in 2013 and promoted to Full Professor in 2019. Since 2024, I have served as Director of the Department of Internal Medicine II at Saarland University Medical Center in Homburg, Germany. My research laboratory focuses on the clinical and experimental mechanisms of metabolic and liver injury, with an emphasis on therapeutic development and the identification of novel biomarkers in NASH. In parallel, I direct a clinical trials center dedicated to phase II and III drug development programs in MASH, primary biliary cholangitis, and liver cirrhosis. I act as the Chair of the Scientific Committee of the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) and serve as an Associate Editor of JHEP Reports.
