About

Climate change is the biggest challenge that our generation has to face. Addressing climate change and moving to a sustainable future requires a transition to a fully renewable energy system. This means producing electricity from renewable sources, but until now there has been a lack of focus on how to integrate this renewable energy into the grid, which is absolutely crucial for a successful energy transition. This is why I founded Sympower in 2015, with the mission to accelerate the energy transition by unlocking demand-side, distributed flexibility. With our in-house, innovative software, we help the energy system become more sustainable (by making space for more renewables in the energy mix) and more inclusive (by making energy markets accessible to anyone). Next to my CEO role, I am passionate about the subject of climate change communication, on which I am a published researcher. I was also a founding committee member of the Dutch Youth Climate Movement (Jonge Klimaatbeweging), where I continue to be active as a coach. Do you want to help enable the transition to a fully renewable energy system? Get in touch with me via LinkedIn or find out more about Sympower at www.sympower.net.

Experience

  • Founder and CEO at Sympower
    Jun 2015 - Present · 11 yrs 2 mos

Sympower is a mission-driven smart energy scaleup. We enable the transition to a fully renewable energy system by unlocking the flexibility of electrical assets and processes: from steel smelting to solar panels, electric vehicles to paper production. We use this flexibility to support an increasingly volatile electricity system, replacing existing, unsustainable sources of flexibility such as coal and gas, and sharing the value created with the owners of the assets and processes. As founder and CEO of Sympower, I lead our international mission-driven team to make grids more sustainable in multiple countries.

  • Researcher in Strategic Narratives for Climate Change at Imperial College London
    Oct 2014 - Aug 2017 · 2 yrs 11 mos

Stronger action is essential if we are to tackle climate change and create a better world for ourselves and our children. I researched how we can facilitate action on climate change by improving communication around the subject, specifically through the use of strategic narratives. As well as my own research, I supervised MSc students and led workshops on developing narratives.
