Senior IT application consultant responsible for the operation and development of the computer aided engineering (CAE) suite of applications to support effective plant engineering processes. Programme Management – Computer Aided Engineering • Collaborate with business representatives to create road map for CAE application landscape. Applications include commercial tools, highly customised platforms (Siemens COMOS) and internally developed engineering tools (Python). • Establish and control budget for CAE landscape, including operations, licensing and development. • Project management of on-going development activities; ensuring that business requirements are well understood, removing of development blockers and monitoring of progress against the foreseen schedule. • Ensure software quality and that testing is complete to a defined standard. • Release management of new developments and maintenance updates. • Reporting and communication to business management and other CAE stakeholders. Azure Environment • Responsible for Azure DevOps environment, including development of DevOps pipelines for automating deployment, onboarding new project teams from business and providing guidance on usage of the platform. • Rollout of cloud environment in accordance with enterprise scale cloud adoption framework. • Deployment and management of Azure resources via Terraform infrastructure-as-code. Development • Support Python development being completed within the business in the area of CAE. • Participate in internal Python working group, providing guidance on internal best practices for in-house development. Operations • Operational responsibility for primary engineering data management platform (±400 users). • User and administrator training and support in the areas of CAE and Azure DevOps. • User training and support in the areas of CAE and Azure DevOps.
Senior system engineer for the Electrical, Instrumentation and Control (EIC) group. Working within project execution (primary contractor) on turnkey construction of waste to energy power plants 25MW – 80MW. Responsible for internal and sub-contractor engineering deliverables in regards to the high voltage distribution system, generator and substation grid connection. Requirements Engineering • Development of the functional description for the plant electric power system, ensuring that it meets contractual and regulatory requirements, in addition to industry best practice. • Complete client contract review and development of engineering specifications for tender. • Technical liaison to project stakeholders including the internal project team, end-clients, owners’ engineers, sub-contractors and electricity network operators. Project Engineering • Completion of primary and detailed engineering for project execution. • Review and control of sub-contractor engineering to ensure that it meets all contractual requirements and the functional design of the electrical system. • Integration engineering of plant systems both between systems and to the distributed control system. • Lead technical discussions and provide suitable justification for design decisions during client design review. • Ensure that plant meets regulatory requirements, including operational performance and compliance testing. Assembling compliance documentation for submittal to regulatory authorities. Project Management • Ensure engineering deliverables, both internal and from sub-contractors, are completed in accordance with the overall project schedule. • Support procurement process and sub-contractor selection, with technical assessment of tenders, in addition to risk and cost evaluation. • Development of the overall commissioning plan for primary electrical plant. Ensuring that sub-contractor activities are correctly sequenced and all necessary dependencies are identified.
Electrical engineer within the Generation Plant Electrical team, primarily responsible for the generator step-up transformers and protection schemes for Mercury’s nine hydro power stations (1048MW over 39 generators). Responsibilities included compliance and routine testing, project justification, specification development, review of technical design and installation, commissioning plan development, on-site commissioning support and approval, performance of on-site commissioning tests and developing engineering policies and standards.
Supported trading functions such as generation dispatch and energy market trading. Predominately worked in the area of optimising hydro dispatch through the development of a hydro dispatch tool (Excel VBA application). This provided real-time feedback to hydro operators in regards to efficiency of generation dispatch along the river chain and produced automated monthly reports of key performance measures.
Evaluated an energy audit completed for cable manufacturing plant and provided recommendations based on feasibility, business interruption and potential savings. Some preliminary work on implementation also completed.
