In 2023, he worked with colleagues to create and launch the Bloomberg Subdial Watch Index, a monthly report that highlighted price values in the secondary watch market. The index tracks prices for the most in demand used watches showing trends and sentiment for the watch industry and has proven highly popular with readers. Prior to joining Bloomberg in 2013, he was the Asia-Pacific Reporter for Canada’s national newspaper, The Globe and Mail. Focusing primarily on business and economic issues, he reported from China, India, Philippines and Australia, among other countries in the region. Hoffman was awarded a 2011 National Newspaper Award, shared with colleague Mark MacKinnon, for an investigation into Sino-Forest Corp., the Chinese timber firm whose shares collapsed following sensational fraud allegations. In 2010, Hoffman won a National Newspaper Award as a member of The Globe team covering BHP Billiton’s $38-billion hostile takeover bid for Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan. Hoffman’s contribution to the effort was a story that uncovered how foreign resource companies -including BHP - had previously broken employment and investment promises made to the Canadian government aimed at winning approval for takeovers of domestic mining firms. He has also been nominated for Canadian Magazine Awards in the categories of investigations and profiles. Prior to joining the Globe, he was a television reporter for Canada’s Business News Network where he covered a variety of major stories including the rise and fall of Conrad Black and the events of September 11th, 2001 from New York.
