The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, founded in 1977, has supported the Beckman Center since its inception in 1989. The mission of the foundation is to "support leading edge research, in the fields of chemistry and life sciences, broadly interpreted, and particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments, and materials that open up new avenues of research and application in these sciences and related disciplines." Dr. Arnold O. Beckman also had a particular interest in fostering and mentoring new researchers. Consistent with the foundation's mission and Dr. Beckman's interests, the Beckman Center supports the development of new and innovative technologies in the biomedical sciences through its Technology Development Seed Grant program, the dissemination of new research tools and training in the use of new technologies through its Service Centers, and the professional development of young scientists through its Medical Scholars and Faculty Recruitment programs and numerous educational programs. Programs • Technology Development • Faculty Recruitment • Medical Scholars • Sponsored Seminars and Symposia • Community Grants Service Centers The Beckman Center’s shared technology resources is comprised of four highly specialized scientific facilities that serve departments and laboratories throughout Stanford University: • Cell Sciences Imaging Facility • Computational Services and Bioinformatics Facility • Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting Facility • Protein and Nucleic Acid Facility In continuous operation since 1989, these core service centers are currently among the largest and most successful service centers at Stanford. Academic Departments & HHMI Serving as a model of interdisciplinary collaboration at Stanford University, the Beckman Center houses three basic science departments: • Biochemistry • Developmental Biology • Molecular and Cellular Physiology As well as the administrative office of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
