The Medical Genetics Unit (MGU) of the University of Parma is a multidisciplinary team engaged in molecular research and advanced diagnostics of genetic and cancer-related diseases. The group integrates expertise in molecular biology, clinical genetics, bioinformatics, and epigenetics, adopting a multi-omics approach to gain an integrated understanding of the mechanisms underlying human disorders. We employ cutting-edge next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, including Oxford Nanopore platforms, for genomic studies and high-resolution molecular characterization. Also, we conduct epigenetic analyses focused on DNA methylation patterns and the identification of epigenetic signatures associated with genetic and neoplastic conditions. Our research projects focus on rare tumors and hereditary cancer syndromes, aiming to elucidate the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms driving their onset and to develop innovative diagnostic tools and personalized medicine approaches. All our scientific activities share a common goal: to improve the quality of life of the population, promoting a model of medicine that is increasingly predictive, preventive, and personalized. Alongside scientific research, the Unit is actively involved in the training of young researchers and in scientific dissemination, with the aim of translating research evidence into practical applications and contributing to the growth of a new generation of scientists capable of integrating biological knowledge, technological expertise, and clinical insight within an open, collaborative, and international research environment.
